Celebrating in style - 11.02.2009

During October and November, the AAT organised some very special events to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of AAT members who have reached significant milestones in their AAT careers. In all, seven 2008 AAT Achievement Award Ceremonies were held in Bournemouth, Harrogate, Birmingham, London, Bath and Liverpool. Look out for the concluding round-up of these Achievement Award Ceremonies in the March issue.

Important changes to tax exams - 11.02.2009

It's essential to be aware of changes in tax rules such as capital allowances when preparing for this summer's tax papers, writes Karen Boyd. The Finance Act 2008 brought about many changes to the tax rules that are examined in Units 18 and 19, known as business taxation computations (BTC) and personal taxation computations (PTC). The main change that affects BTC is in capital allowances, and this article gives you a comprehensive example. The changes to PTC are such that the June 2008 exam paper has been redrafted to incorporate the new rules. A copy of this paper, with accompanying answers, is available on the AAT website.

Extreme Accountants fly in Flugtag - 16.06.2008
A large crowd gathered in Hyde Park on Saturday 7 June, to watch the second Red Bull Flugtag. Sponsored by CODA, four intrepid Extreme Accountants from Centrica flew a purpose built plane, the Risk Calculator, off a 6m high ramp over the Serpentine. As they descended, they calculated the depreciation of the plane while avoiding sunk costs and protecting their assets.


Accountants honoured for exceptional charitable work - 16.06.2008
Volunteering time and expertise for a good cause has been rewarding in more ways than one for four members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). The 2008 Everybody Counts award winners: Adrian Radford, Jacqueline Frost, Kath Qualtrough and Keith Bonham, were rewarded with £2,000 for their charity and a certificate for their achievements.


Iris and AAT celebrate 20 years of IT innovation - 12.06.2008
IRIS, an accounting software provider, has commended the AAT for being "innovative and forward thinking" in its decision 20 years ago to implement the IRIS Profile Concept CRM and Membership Management System.
